To comply with new EMV security standards put in place in 2022, we have removed “tap” functionality from any Seed or ePort device that is not EMV contactless compliant starting December 1st, 2022.
These devices will continue to accept magstripe (“swipe”) payments and send telemetry information as normal. However, “tap” payments from credit cards, debit cards, and mobile wallets will no longer be accepted. For a detailed walkthrough of how to find which of your devices are affected, click here for more information.
We encourage operators to upgrade their impacted devices to EMV-compliant card readers to enjoy the full benefits of contactless payment acceptance and increased security that comes with the upgraded technology.
If you wish to discuss your upgrade options further or want to better understand the coming changes, please contact 888.561.4748 or reach out to your Account Representative. Please see the FAQs below for additional information.
EMV is a security standard jointly created by Europay, Mastercard, and Visa (i.e., “EMV”) that reduces the chance of in-person credit/debit card fraud and increases the security of consumer financial data.
To incentivize adoption of the EMV security requirements on cashless card readers, the processors began charging monthly fines for all merchants accepting non-EMV contactless (“tap”) payments in May 2022. While Cantaloupe has been absorbing these fines for our customers, we were left with two options: 1) sunset the affected devices completely, or 2) remove contactless payment acceptance on non-EMV devices.
We believe removing contactless payments was the better of the two options to support our customers in the light of these new requirements.
This means that debit and credit card “tap” payments will no longer be processed on non-EMV Seed and ePort readers. Mobile walletpayments will also no longer be accepted. However, magswipe payments will continue as normal.
Only devices that do not accept EMV contactless payments will be affected. For instructions on how to run a report to show which of your card readers are not EMV contactless compliant, click here. To see a full list of affect cashless readers (along with image of the card readers), click here.
All Seed devices will need to be upgraded to EMV compatible cashless kits in order to continue accepting “tap” payments.
Card readers that are not contactless EMV compliant will no longer accept contactless (“tap”) payments starting December 1st, 2022. Magstripe (“swipe”) payments and telemetry will continue to operate as normal.
For the large majority of impacted devices, the answer is, unfortunately, no. The only way to continue to accept “tap” payments after December 1st is to upgrade to an EMV-compliant device. A small number of newer ePort devices can be upgraded with a new bezel/card reader. To determine if you have any such devices, please contact Customer Support.
The first step you should take is to identify if any of your devices are affected. For instructions on how to do that, click here.

All new cashless devices purchased from Cantaloupe today accept EMV contactless payments. The ePort Engage and ePort G11 are our most popular models that accept EMV contactless payments.
Processors are charging a $5,000 monthly fine per merchant location starting, with the fine doubling every month thereafter. Cantaloupe is absorbing these fines to allow customers time to upgrade.
No, customers will not be fined for choosing not to upgrade a non-EMV device. Cantaloupe will continue to absorb any fines from payment processors for EMV non-compliance. However, to prevent additional ongoing fines from being incurred, non-EMV “tap” payments will be turned off on December 1st, 2022.
Cantaloupe is offering discounted pricing on readers and absorbing fines from processors related to contactless EMV compliance until December 1st to allow for our customers to have a smooth transition for their devices.
While we believe the removal of “tap” payment functionality will extend the usable life of Seed and ePort devices that do not accept EMV contactless, this should not be considered a permanent solution. We encourage operators to upgrade their impacted devices to EMV-compliant card readers to enjoy the full benefits of contactless payment acceptance and increased security that comes with the upgraded technology.
This change is only affecting US-based card readers that are not EMV compliant.
